Staying on at school

After S3 or S4 some of you will be in the position to choose your subjects again to study Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications. This means specialising a bit more.

It is really important to research your options and choose the subjects to suit the career or course you want to do. Subjects don’t always directly match up to what job or careers you end up pursuing, but some courses require you to do key subjects.

Some jobs, and indeed some courses, require you to have built up some relevant experience. You’ll also need to be able to demonstrate that you have the required skills. It’s a good idea to find out what skills and experience you need for the job or course that you want to do. This will help you to pick the right subjects where you can build the skills you need, and also to think about how you can get some experience in your chosen area, such as through volunteering or work experience opportunities.
